I'm starting to wonder if all the hoohaa lately is part of a contrived publicity stunt ...
hey guys, i am from the pcpowerplay community. i post there on their forums a lot and Warbeast came in last night (to one of our chatrooms, on austnet servers using IRC)(aussie time) and was talking about it. i have one of the discs with the demo on. i can assure you that dude & deal mentioned before in other posts (anthony fordham & robert deal respectively) are sincere about their position. these guys wouldnt intentially do anything that would be past a developer because they love games and i'm sure this could screw the developers in some way.
Probably just as well. The September pre-alpha build bears about as much resemblance to a playable game (ANY playable game, never mind all the cuts and changes since) as I do to a bologna and cheese sandwich. Very little actually works; just enough for QS to be able to show the necessary milestones had been reached. It's only slightly more exciting than solitaire Pong. About the only thing you'll see worth seeing is some art...but a lot of that was released on various sites.
This is the opinion of someone who possesses a copy (from when I was with QS) and has experimented with it. If I used CDs as coasters, this one would've been coaster material within minutes.
Don't waste your time lusting after it, folks. I can't even begin to underestimate the intelligence of whatever exec thought this thing was a "demo" worthy of public release. "Demolition", maybe, but not "demonstration". That the game mag actually included it shows they only love making sales of their magazine, not that they "love games".
If I'd known then what I know now, I'd never have done all the stuff that led me to what I know now...

They're really late...
Stormhound, about that demo, what is functioning after all? Any battle is possible or not? Researching any tech? Building any ship? Terraform anything? Or just screenshots?

My name is Anthony Fordham and I'm the editor of PC PowerPlay, the magazine in question. (you can email me on anthonyf@next.com.au - Next Media is the name of our company).
Even though this contradicts my previous post which I notice has made it up here (cheers!) here we go:
Yes, we seem to have published an E3 build. No, we didn't know it was an E3 build at the time.
This was not a normal demo, because normally we put what WE want on the coverdisc. In this case however, we HAD to put it on the coverdisc as part of another deal with GameNation, Infrogrames' Australian distributor.
Point 6 of an agreement that GameNation had me sign reads: "PC Powerplay guarantees to publish an exclusive Master of Orion 3 demo on the next issue of PC PowerPlay."
We got the demo, like so many other demos, on official, printed GameNation CD media. It looked totally legit. We installed it, ran it, and it appeared normal, but it looks like we lucked out there; other people have experienced numerous bugs.
It would appear that GameNation has REALLY screwed the pooch on this one and given us Alpha code.
I would like to apologise to Quicksilver and to the MOO3 community for this turn of events and sincerely regret that the developers' work has been exposed in an imperfect state like this. PCPP as a magazine is wholly against all forms of illegal software distribution, and as gamers we respect and admire developers and their right not to have imperfect work exposed.
Naturally, the can of worms is now open and this build will probably be all over the Net by now - shame on you warez kiddies! (still if we hadn't published it... oh well!)
I just want to re-iterate what everyone already knows - this build is NOT the MOO3 that you love and anticipate so readily. It shows outdated features that may have been removed altogether or changed dramatically. It contains bugs and glitches that are the normal part of the development process and will NOT be present in the final code (or at least, most of them won't, hopefully!).
Thanks for your concern, it's always good to see such a strong community rallying around the developer they admire.
Great response! We all should realize that mistakes can be made, and I never understood why everyone jumped on you (the publishers and editors of the magazine). Everyone was trying to do their job, and someone got overzealous, big whoop.
I never know their names, But i smile just the same

You were just doing your job and did nothing really wrong. But Infogrames Australia... I wouldn't want to be them right now.

To the bulk of that i can say........ NO! {either that, or its so hidden away, i cant find it.}
Well battle is possible if you follow the instructions to see a demo of it but other than that, it seems to get a game crashing bug everytime it may even look like combat.
*rushes off to buy a copy of PC Powerplay before they all get recalled* (at infogames expence I take it)

For non-Australians (ie you poor foreign fools) PC Powerplay is our only major PC games magazine, and a damn fine one it is too. Just to put in in context, a couple of years ago it drove the 'Australian' version of the major American magazine PC Gamer out of business.
